A pair of diamond studs is a matching exercise as much as a grading exercise. Two stones are sold as a pair when they share carat weight (within ~0.02ct), color (within one GIA grade — e.g., F-F or F-G), clarity (within one grade), and cut quality. Mismatched pairs read visibly different on the lobes even when both stones are individually high-grade.

For studs, the most important grades are cut and color. Brilliance carries the visual weight at conversational distance — a 0.50ct round in Excellent cut, G color, VS2 clarity outperforms a 0.75ct Good cut, J color, VVS1 on the lobe almost every time. Clarity below SI1 risks visible inclusions on tilted stud profiles where the table sits at an angle to the viewer.
